Competence Centre for Health Promotion in Hospitals and Health Care at the Austrian Public Health Institute, Vienna, Austria

The Competence Centre for Health Promotion in Hospitals and Health Care in Vienna is situated at the Austrian Public Health Institute (Gesundheit Öesterreich GmbH, short GOEG). GOEG represents the largest public health institute in Austria. Its shareholder is the Austrian Federal Government, represented by the Federal Minister of Health. Concerning its research activities GOEG is not bound by instructions from its shareholder. Established in 2006 based on a much older institute,  GOEG has strong relations with both, academic research institutions and public bodies. The Competence Centre has been founded in 1992 by WHO and the Austrian Ministry of Health at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the Sociology of Health and Medicine (later Ludwig Boltzmann Institute Health Promotion Research). Already from 1990 to 2001, the institute functioned as Coordinating Centre for the international WHO Network of Health Promoting Hospitals (HPH). Since 2001, the Centre continues to fulfill some of the coordinating functions for the HPH network (scientifically supporting the annual international HPH conferences and editing of the International HPH Newsletter). Furthermore, it provides scientific support for developing concepts and the knowledge base for health promotion in hospitals and other health services.
